Listed below are some key objectives from the Diocesan Curriculum Guide for this grade level.
Religion
Our goal for your child is for him/her to learn:
á to identify major New Testament books and their authors as well find them in the Bible
á to understand the call of all Christians to discipleship
á to recognize the marks of the Church and to identify the ways these marks are visible
á to identify the roles and responsibilities of the Laity
á to know the location, leader, and overall function within the following geographical boundaries of the Church: parish, diocese, archdiocese, and Vatican City
á to develop an age-appropriate understanding of the Sainthood and our Blessed Mother, Mary
á to develop an age-appropriate understanding of the Sacraments
á to realize that the Spirit is the fulfillment of JesusÕ promise to remain with us until the end of time
á to know the structure of the Mass including its symbolisms and to identify the liturgical cycle by seasons, practices/customs and color
á to know and recite important prayers such as the Nicene Creed and the Acts of Faith, Hope and Love
á to demonstrate respect for their own body, those of others, and for life itself
á to develop an understanding of the function and importance of vocations in the Church
Language Arts
Our goal for your child is for him/her to learn:
á to express main ideas and important details in summary form
á to learn to spell words with prefixes and suffixes
á to spell words containing vowels with no sound clues
á to begin to identify relationships in verbal analogies as well as to solve them
á to respond to storytelling or oral reading by: arranging events in sequential order up to 10 steps and to apply principles in a story to real life
á to identify and understand cause and effect relationships and to make inferences
á to demonstrate literary appreciation by identifying: character traits from action, dialogue and authorÕs description; characteristics of legends; types of historical fiction; and, conflict, imagery and tone within a story or its characters
á to use a dictionary/glossary to determine word origins and histories or to determine common roots of a word
á to identify and demonstrate appropriate use of: objects of propositions, appositions, demonstrative pronouns, and troublesome verbs
á to identify and demonstrate appropriate understanding of prepositions and conjunctions/interjections
á to apply the writing process to reports, character sketches, journals, narrative, descriptive, and persuasive paragraphs
á to be proficient in cursive handwriting
Math
Our goal for your child is for him/her to learn:
á to identify Roman numeral symbols as well as translating them to Arabic numerals and vice versa
á to recognize the associative and commutative property of multiplication as well as to use the inverse relationship between multiplication and division to complete number sentences
á to use patterns of factor pairs to identify prime and composite numbers and to identify the prime factors of a number
á to add, multiply and divide with decimals age-appropriately
á to multiply and divide fractions and mixed numbers as well as simplify them
á to apply estimation in order to anticipate the answer to check for reasonableness in problem solving as well as to evaluate the outcome
á to use mean, median, mode, and range to describe data
á to determine the most appropriate type of graph for data and situation
á to define and use age-appropriate measurement and geometry skills
Science
Our goal for your child is for him/her to learn:
á to distinguish between a hypothesis and a theory
á to label the major parts of the circulatory, respiratory, and excretory systems and to describe their functions
á to identify and recognize types and structure of minerals as well as their physical properties and chemical properties
á to explain the formation of fossil fuels, the natural process of erosion, as well as the deposition process
á to identify and understand basic principles of weather such as temperature, air masses, humidity, etc.
á to identify and understand basic principles of water and oceans
á to identify and understand basic principles of space and astronomy
Social Studies
Our goal for your child is for him/her to learn:
á to understand why globes include information more accurately than flat maps
á to understand the basic economic and societal patterns of early societies in the U.S.
á to list, understand, and explain key components in the American Revolution
á to explain the need for and the meaning of the Preamble, U.S. Constitution, and Bill of Rights
á to understand and discuss issues dealing with Native Americans in relation to occupation of land and westward expansion
á to explain reasons for the development of the plantation system, the growth of slave trade, the spread of slavery and the Emancipation Proclamation
á to demonstrate the system of checks and balances outlined in the Constitution as well as to understand democratic principles
á to understand the democratic process of elections, the purpose of a court and the impact of landmark Supreme Court cases
á to use writing skills to describe/interpret historical events
á to discover and explain the organization of their textbook, to list and explain study and test-taking strategies for this subject and to identify the main idea of a social studies selection
