Religion
Our goal for your child is for him/her to learn:
á to recognize creation as a sign of GodÕs power, love, and continual presence in our lives
á to describe the Bible as GodÕs inspired word articulated by various authors
á to recognize Jesus as the fullness of GodÕs revelation and GodÕs covenant with us
á to recognize that grace is available to us because of the redemptive act of Jesus
á to identify the four major categories of prayer: petition, adoration, contrition, thanksgiving
á to know and recite the mysteries of the Rosary
á to recognize sin in relationship to oneÕs attitudes and to the development of a relationship with God and others
á to identify some people who have worked for social justice and describe their movements
Language Arts
Our goal for your child is for him/her to learn:
á to interpret meaning through speakerÕs language choice, deliver, volume, tone, pitch, and nonverbal clues
á to develop speaking techniques: tone, volume, pitch, tempo, emphasis, inflection, pronunciation, gesture, posture, and eye contact
á to learn to spell words with no sound clues, with possessives and with various prefixes
á to identify an implied main idea and to organize a main idea and its supporting details in one outline
á to identify characteristics of the following genres: fantasy and realistic-fiction
á to identify language techniques such as exaggeration, alliteration, similes, metaphors, idioms, onomatopoeia, and personification
á to develop dictionary/glossary skills and to use a thesaurus
á to be actively involved in understanding the rules and usage related to the major parts of speech in writing
á to distinguish between simple and compound sentences
á to know and apply rules of capitalization and punctuation in an age-appropriate manner
á to learn, practice and understand the writing process as it pertains to drafting, re-writing, and publishing student work
á to apply the writing process to narrative/descriptive essays as well as poetry in couplet form
Math
Our goal for your child is for him/her to learn:
á to read, write, and use numbers through at least six-digits and identifies place value
á recalls multiplication and division facts through 12
á to identify least common multiple, greatest common factor, and to apply rounding to estimate whole numbers
á to compare, order, convert and rewrite fractions (age-appropriate)
á to make a decision based on the results of problem solving
á to identify and demonstrate an understanding of basic geometric principles (age-appropriate)
Science
Our goal for your child is for him/her to learn:
á to identify the steps in the scientific method and to design and conduct an experiment using that knowledge
á to define organisms as well as begin to understand the process of classification
á to understand what plants need to grow and live as well as to name the major parts of a flower and their functions
á to distinguish between environment and habitat as well as learned behaviors and instinct
á to define and distinguish between elements, mixtures, and compounds
Social Studies
Our goal for your child is for him/her to learn:
á to apply basic geographic principles such as cardinal directions, lines of longitude and latitude, and continents/oceans
á to apply basic map skills such as estimating distance between two points on a map as well as understanding elevation and map projections
á to identify major historical documents and their main ideas as well as many significant historic dates and milestones in the U.S.
á to describe the structure and functions of both the state and federal government
á to explain the basic rights and freedoms of a U.S. citizen
á to list historical sources and to distinguish between primary and secondary sources in relation to researching information
á to identify and locate historic landmarks in Texas as well as understand the economic motivations for European exploration and settlement in Texas
á to know the significance of historic dates, people, places, and events in Texas history
