Listed below are some key objectives from the Diocesan Curriculum Guide for this grade level.
Religion
Our goal for your child is for him/her to learn:
á to recognize the human call to be stewards of GodÕs creation
á to discuss the mission of Jesus as priest, prophet, and king
á to explain that the Church continues the mission of Jesus on earth
á to recognize the visible structure of the Church and its teaching authority which was established by Christ with ordained ministers
á to define and identify sacramentals as well as to discuss the meaning of liturgical gestures such as kneeling, genuflecting and singing
á to know and recite the Rosary
á to discuss how we apply the social dimensions of the Gospel to our daily relationships
Language Arts
Our goal for your child is for him/her to learn:
á to listen to identify specific information from a speakerÕs message: instructional materials from content area, etc.
á to read a variety of genres (including fiction, non-fiction, and poetry), both contemporary and classic works, for pleasure and/or information from print and electronic sources
á to learn the functions of: compound words, homographs, syllable divisions, prefixes and suffixes
á to identify characteristics of myths, mysteries, adventures, comedies, autobiographies/biographies and acts in a play
á to develop test-taking skills by: reading and following directions, interpreting various test formats, identifying word cues, and reading all choices before choosing an answer
á to develop basic sentence patterns and variations
á to select and use reference materials and resources as needed for writing as well as rewrite a final draft
á to respond to literature and demonstrate learning through oral and written reports, drawing, painting, etc.
á to apply the writing process to journals, book reports, factual reports and short stories
á to demonstrate proper formation of cursive letters
Math
Our goal for your child is for him/her to learn:
á to read, write, and use at least three-digit numbers and to identify place value
á to solve three- and four-digit addition and subtraction problems with regrouping
á to recall multiplication/division facts through 12
á to find common factors of a set of numbers and to list as least six multiples of a given number
á to round whole numbers
á to discuss alternate solution strategies and relationships among problems
á to use concrete models of customary and metric units to measure length, height, volume, capacity, weight, and mass
Science
Our goal for your child is for him/her to learn:
á to compare and contrast physical and chemical changes as well as properties of matter
á to formulate a hypothesis based on direct and indirect evidence
á to describe and identify parts of the solar system as well as to investigate human exploration of space
á to define energy, force, magnetism, and electricity
á to explain how machines can conserve energy
Social Studies
Our goal for your child is for him/her to learn:
á to understand and determine latitude and longitude as it relates to absolute location on both maps and globes
á to gather information and to construct a map as well as be familiar with an atlas
á to describe the structure and functions of the local government
á to recognize a citizenÕs obligation to apply ChristÕs teachings
á to identify ways in which people are both producers and consumers
á to use news sources (in an age-appropriate way) to identify and discuss current events in the community and world
