Listed below are some key objectives from the Diocesan Curriculum Guide for this grade level.

 

Religion

Our goal for your child is for him/her to learn:

á to define a parable as well as to discuss some of the lessons found in the parables and their impact on the Church

á to identify the pastor of the schoolÕs parish, parish priests and religious, the Bishop of the Diocese and the Pope

á to define the mystery of the Trinity as the one God with three divine persons who are distinct and equal

á to know the rites and symbols associated with the sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation and the Holy Eucharist

á to recognize the various liturgical seasons and holy days

á to display the proper disposition for worship

á to identify Mary as the model of faith, witness of prayer and intercessor

 

Language Arts

Our goal for your child is for him/her to learn:

á to listen to a selection or presentation to distinguish fact from opinion

á to clearly state a 2 to 6 step sequence of directions as age/grade appropriate

á to select texts for needs, interest, and enjoyment

á to use word order and context clues for word identifications, pronunciation, and meaning

á to apply age-appropriate spelling, grammar and punctuation rules

á to learn the functions/uses of compound words, homographs, syllable divisions, prefixes and suffixes

á to use phrases and expression in oral reading

á to identify characteristics of fables, proverbs, tall tales

á to identify a bookÕs character (major and minor) as well as setting and time in a story

á to develop appropriate test-taking skills and experience various test formats

á to identify and create the 4 types of sentences

á to recognize the function of a final draft and to rewrite a final draft for publication

 

Math

Our goal for your child is for him/her to learn:

á to write numbers appropriate to grade level in words, in expanded form and in standard notation

á to solve two-digit addition and subtraction problems with regrouping

á to name the number resulting from joining or separating a set of objects into equivalent sets

á to compute correct change from coin amounts that have been mastered

á to apply estimation to anticipate the answer and to check for reasonableness in problem-solving

á to draw conclusions involving three or four pieces of information displayed on a graph

á to check an estimated measurement by actual measurement

 

Science

Our goal for your child is for him/her to learn:

á to demonstrate grouping and classification

á to sequence scientific phenomena such a life cycles, water cycle, etc.

á to identify the parts and to describe the functions of a flower

á to identify and describe major cloud formations

á to compare the sun, moon, and earth by sizes and properties

á to recognize the characteristics of the planets

Social Studies

Our goal for your child is for him/her to learn:

á to locate and name the continents and oceans on a map and globe

á to identify leaders in national, state, and local governments

á to define the qualities of a good citizen

á to identify the difference between a need and a want, and explain how the difference affects spending habits

á to create and interpret horizontal timelines on an age-appropriate level
