Listed below are some key objectives from the Diocesan Curriculum Guide for this grade level.

 

Religion

Our goal for your child is for him/her to learn:

á to recognize GodÕs involvement in the history of His people through Bible stories

á to understand that God created the universe

á to identify and understand the Two Great Commandments (Love God, Love One Another)

á to identify Mary as the Mother of God, Mother of Jesus and to describe important events related to her

á to explain the reason for and the importance of attending Sunday Mass as well as proper Mass behavior

á to know and recite basic prayers including a meal blessing and a morning offering

á to recognize God as a loving creator always ready to forgive

 

Language Arts

Our goal for your child is for him/her to learn:

á to listen for a main idea, recognize cause and effect, and to predict outcomes

á to set a purpose for reading; to adjust reading speed and method depending on the type of material and the purpose for reading

á to draw a man with six body parts, to lace shoes and tie knots, to write letters as well as some words and sentences

á to decode by using all letter-sound correspondences within a word

á to use phonic analysis to identify consonants, long/short vowels, some blends, digraphs, and dipthongs as well as initial clusters

á to learn and apply age-appropriate spelling rules

á to identify characteristics of poems, fairy tales, folk tales and non-fiction (i.e. Weekly Reader)

á to develop grammar skills such as identifying nouns, verbs, and adjectives

á to create and write a complete simple sentence as well as recognize and correct sentence fragments

á to know and apply age-appropriate rules of capitalization and punctuation

á to apply the writing process to brief journals, short stories, friendly letters and simple poetry

 

Math

Our goal for your child is for him/her to learn:

á to count objects by twos, fives, and tens

á count ordinal numbers to 10 and rote numbers to 20

á to rearrange a horizontal number sentence to a vertical number sentence

á to recall basic addition and subtraction facts

á to solve two-digit addition problems with regrouping

á to compute total value of coins in a mixed group as well as to select the proper coins to equal a designated amount

á to understand and describe date displayed on a graph as well as make predictions based upon information from the graph

á to compare geometric figures by size and shape

 

Science

Our goal for your child is for him/her to learn:

á to classify plants according to characteristics and needs

á to compare and contrast carnivores, herbivores, and omnivores

á to distinguish between the 3 states of matter as solids, liquids and gases

 

Social Studies

Our goal for your child is for him/her to learn:

á to locate the equator on the map and globe as well as locate local continent and country

á to identify the symbols/slogans that represent the U.S. and tell why we have them (i.e. eagle, flag, Statue of Liberty, etc.)

á to identify and list means of transportation and their uses
